2025 ILXCTF Cross Country Previews - IHSA Class 2A Boys Teams

By Michael Newman

What changes Class 2A Boys this fall is the three Class 1A schools that will be in Class 2A all of them ranked in the top 10 top start the season. There will be a new state championship team with Payton Prep moving up to Class 3A. Niles Northridge Prep is the defending champion in Class 1A that will have to settle for going after a state title in this Class. Dixon starts the season as the top Boys team in Class 2A for many reasons. The quality of their returning runners plus a good freshman group are two of the reasons why. Morton finished second in last year’s state meet and despite losing their top three runners, chances are there for the Potters to leave Detweiller with another trophy. Northridge Prep, Peoria Notre Dame, and Aurora Central Catholic are former Class 1A schools. Mt Vernon could be the surprise team that could stay in the top five this fall.

Here is a look at the top Class 2A teams along with a look at some other teams to watch this fall.

1 – Dixon

Coach – Simon Thorpe

2024 Finish – 4th, 2A State

Big Northern Conference

Runners – Dean Geiger JR, Keegan Shirley SR, Averick Wiseman JR, Ethan Carter FR, Abram Garcia FR, Westin Conatser SR, Brody Hopper JR, Kohlson Stumpf SR, Noah Terviel SR, Alonzo Bautista FR, Jaron Greve FR.

Preview – Dixon came so close to taking a trophy home but finished fourth in the 2A State Meet missing hardware by one point. This squad is focusing on the big prize this fall with five state runners back. The addition of a great freshman group that will contribute immediately. “Our summer was extremely efficient and valuable for the majority of the Dukes,” said Dixon Coach, Simon Thorpe. “Many of the upperclassmen took a step-up in their training and have been able to integrate the incoming Freshmen into the team dynamic. This is now their team to lead, which I've felt is dictated by the quantity of time spent together. They are on the same page in terms of discipline, and thus motivation, and have worked extremely well as a unit, which was an initial concern of mine.”

Dean Geiger should step into the team’s top spot after finishing 28th last year. “Dean has developed into being a leader of this young-Ish squad, and it has been a work in progress to get there,” added Thorpe. He has put together 8 weeks of 50 mpw and is now progressing into 55 mpw. His 28th place at state in 2024, a few seconds and points away from achieving his goals, has been in the forefront of his mind since last XC, and he is doing the "small" things that he could not do previously. He set PR's in the 400, 800, 1600, and XC in the last year and rides a big confidence wave from the track season where he anchored the 4x800 guys to their first state medal.” Look for a definition of what a team runner is, and you will see a picture of Geiger. Keegan Shirley and Averick Wiseman have stepped up over the past year and will give the Dukes a solid nucleus in their top five. The three should be separated between 25 to 30 seconds. Weston Conatser was the team’s fifth runner last year and again will contribute to this squad.

The freshman class that joins this team is special. Ethan Carter leads that group after winning the IESA 3A title last fall. His times dropped during track running 4:29 at the IESA State Meet. He also ran 9:37 at Race at State, Abram Garcia is on the same page as Carter running 4:27 this spring for 1600 and winning the Class 1A state title last fall. Both will push for top five spots and maybe all-state positions.

Their focus appears to be steel clad entering this fall. We will get an idea of how good this team will be in Peoria in a couple of weeks. Added Coach Thorpe: “The goal of the Dixon Dukes is to win the IHSA XC 2A State Meet in 2025. Narrowly missing a state trophy last year was agonizing but may have been better for these guys in the long term as they seek to find "1 point" each day in training. They will continually seek to get better, because we need to as a young team, so time is on our side as the season commences. There are many good teams in 2A this season, so it will be a dogfight; whether we are victorious, it is nice to be in the conversation. With the amount of talent in this Freshmen class, and in next year’s Freshmen class, winning the state title will be a legitimate goal of the Dixon Dukes for the next four years. This is a momentous period in the history of the Dixon Dukes, and I feel a great responsibility to guide these boys to the end, wherever that may be. But first, we stick to the basics: Long runs, long LT sessions, and a fair amount of french contrast so we can improve physiologically as compared to ourselves the day before.”

2 – Morton

Coach – Joe Zeller

2024 Finish – 2nd, 2A State

Mid Illini Conference

Runners – Abe Martin SO, Keyston Beyer JR, Noah Harris JR, Maxwell Carter JR, Isaiah Hartter SO, Luke Baker SR, Duke Hendrick JR, Ethan Cross SR, Ben Roth SO, Owen Riesberg FR, Luke Geyer FR.

Preview – Morton had a solid 2024 landing in the Class 2A top five most of the year. The Potters ran their best race of the year last November and finished second at Detweiller Park. Their top three runners have graduated giving Morton a younger look. Ten of their top 12 runners will be underclassmen this season. They will be a tight pack team. Abe Martin was the team’s fourth runner and be part of their top five, Keyston Beyer, Noah Harris, and Isaiah Hartter also have state experience and will challenge for the #1 spot. Maxwell Carter did not start to run until the middle of October due to an injury. Carter did earn all-state honors last spring finishing sixth in the 3200 Meter Run. He had a great summer of training and someone we could see as Morton’s top runner. Their top five spread is projected to be between 20 to 25 seconds. That kind of tightness could be dangerous for other teams if the Porters have two all-state runners leading them.

3 – Niles Northridge Prep

Coach – Julian Murphy

2024 Finish – 1st, 1A State

Independent Scholastic League

Runners – John Masaka JR, Peter Kipp SR, Blake Quinley JR, Ryan Holler SR. Josh Allen JR, Mike Reiff SR, Josh Almendras JR, Peter Kurkowski SR, Fenan Wahiela JR, John Schweihs SO

Preview – Northridge Prep enters this year is the Class 1A defending champion. It is a title they will not be defending since the school has been moved up to Class 2A. That does not mean that the Knights could win another state title. There has been no school that has won a title in one class that won the next year in a lower/higher classification. This could be the year that it happens.

That state experience is back with 11 of their top 12 returning with six of the top state runners ready to go. John Masaka and Peter Kipp give Northridge a solid 1-2 pack the two separated by four seconds, both all-state. Blake Quinley and Ryan Holler were top five runners at the end of the year. The time spread at state between Kipp and Quinley was 32 seconds. Josh Allen finished together with Holler at state. The Knights came on strong at the end of the year finishing second at the Lisle Sectional, then their best race at state. Northridge starts out at Fenton and then two weeks later at Richard Spring. We will see how their spread during September. This squad is strong enough to be successful again this November in Peoria.

4 – Mt. Vernon

Coach – Trace Turner

2024 Finish – 19th, 2A State

South Seven Conference

Runners – Rowan Wilford SR, Trace Elliott SR, Carson Workman SR, Joel Hayes SR, Jayden Jones JR, Liam Brandon SO, Ayden Warren SO, Willie Green FR, Rylan Cravens FR

Preview – The Rams return all their top seven runners from the state finishing 19th place. Mt. Vernon will look to qualify for their fourth state meet in a row. It is a small roster, but they do have the runners to finish among the top 10 teams this fall. “This team is focused,” said Trace Turner, their coach. “We are pushing the mileage within reason. This team is focused and ready to demonstrate their excellence on the course.”

The top spot at the end of last year was interchangeable with Rowan Wilford, Trace Elliott, and Joel Hayes the runners that claimed that spot. Wilford was the top runner at state finishing 64th. Carson Workman and Jayden Jones had good summers of training and will be ready to go. “Carson was our #4 guy in xc season last season. He had to fight mono during track season in 2024, but he has been running strong, recovered and running better than ever,” said Turner. “Jayden has taken the next step in his training. He was our number #5 in xc as a sophomore last season he has been putting in the miles and will be battling to be in our top 3.” The team had a 40 second spread on their top five last year at state. The Rams will be a top 10 team this fall if they can move that top three closer to the front which should happen.

5 – Peoria Notre Dame

Coach – Dan Gray

2024 Finish – 5th, 1A State

Big 12 Conference

Runners – Maxwell Kirby JR, Dax Duffy SR, Frederic Gouri JR, Ben Yontz JR, Joshua Stedwill JR, Augie Crank JR, Julian Strum SR, Beau Duffy SO, Michael Guingrich SR, Teddy Showalter JR, Dylan Crank FR, Gabe Yontz FR

Preview – The Irish had success in Class 1A that concluded last year by finishing fifth at the state meet. That changes this fall with PND moving up to Class 2A. This team does not come into this season empty handed with 16 out of their top 18 in 2024 all back. “This group is hungry,” said their Coach Dan Gray. “With Max Kirby healthy after an illness riddled track season, these guys have worked, logging bigger mileage at faster paces than ever before. They want to prove that they can run with 2A teams this year, and they have trained all summer with calculation, enthusiasm, and their sights on the future.”

Kirby will be the runner to watch for this team having run 14:47 at Detweiller Park last November to finish fourth in Class 1A. He just missed all-state last spring finishing 10th (9:42.88) in the 2A 3200. He could be among the top five runners come November; There is a solid group behind Kirby with Dax Duffy, Luje Fady, Joshua Stedwill, and Ben Yontz all within 60 seconds of each other. The key is getting their gap under 40 seconds to Kirby. “We want to prove that we can compete with the best in 2A while we return a deep core,” Gray said.

6 – Aurora Central Catholic

Coach – Troy Kerber

2024 Finish – 6th, 1A State

Chicago Catholic League

Runners – Ben Bohr JR, Jack Swiatek SR, John Reinbold SO, AJ Viveros JR, Cal Reinbold SO, Reece Voller JR, Brecken Oester SO, Bryan Lopez JR, Nikolas Schupbach SR, Tyler Bracke FR

Preview – The Chargers are the third Class 1A private schools that are projected to be in the top 10 in Class 2A this fall. ACC has five runners back from that state team. “The returning trio of Ben Bohr, Jack Swiatek, and John Reinbold has especially great summer’s training coming off each of their sub 4:26 1600 track season’s,” said their coach, Troy Kerber. “This trio will be very strong in 2A and the key to the rest of our success as a team will be reliant on the consistency and continuous development of Juniors AJ Viveros, Bryan Lopez, and Reece Voller as well as freshman standout Tyler Bracke.” They will miss sophomore Cal Reinbold who will miss the season due to a non-running knee injury. The Chargers should have a top five spread near 45 seconds that will be boosted by freshman Tyler Bracke. Bohr was all-state last fall finishing 23rd in Class 1A. Their top three trio could all finish in the top 30. That would mean good things for this team when they get into November.

7 – Bethalto Civic Memorial

Coach – Jake Peal

2024 Finish – 18th, 2A State

Mississippi Valley Conference

Runners – Max Weber SR, Landon Kearbey SR, Jacob Cranford SR, Tullio Zamperi SR, Logan Kearbey JR, Joshua Cranford SR, Glenn Collins JR, Wesley Stewart SR, Boden Duffy FR, Hayden Harshbarger FR, Noah Palmer FR

Preview – The Eagles had some growing pains during the season which ended by finishing sixth at the Richland County and 18th at state. Those experiences could pay off this fall with their entire top seven back. “This winter and spring the team learned from those growing pains and made the adjustments in training and team culture that allowed us to make improvements,” said Coach Jake Peel. “Now that we have a group of juniors and seniors that all returned, these boys have been more dialed in and focused than ever. This is the most connected team we've had in a long time, and for us to be able to run well in November that is something that must continue to be at the forefront of everyone's minds running for each other.”

Max Weber could be one of the premier Class 2A this fall after finish 13th at state. He was one of two athletes in Class 2A to medal in the 3200/1600 last spring finishing fifth in both. The second through five pack of Landon Kearby, Jacob Cranford, Logan Kearby, and Tulio Zamperi were separated by 39 seconds at state and will need to that spread between 35-40 seconds for this team to be effective. The spread between Weber and the pack at state was 48 seconds. Getting the group to within 30 seconds of their top runner will mean good things this fall. “I love this group of guys,” added Peal. “They have stood together through thick and thin the last 3-4 years. This group has a lot of veteran leadership and maturity to it. This summer we've made some changes to our training, and they were excited and chomping at the bit to make those changes. That says a lot about how focused they are on accomplishing our goals this fall. One thing we are working on this fall is the way that we speak about training and racing. I've really challenged the team to navigate a Seek vs. Show mindset. If we can consistently grow into seekers then the possibilities are endless for what we can achieve this fall.”

8 – Mahomet-Seymour

Coach – Andrew Wallner

2024 Finish – 6th, 2A State

Apollo Conference

Runners – Augustus Gaudio SR, Henry McMurry SR, Tate Bode JR, Adam Smigielski SO, Tayten Gergen SO, Henry Welch SO, Kiptyn Fan SO, Carter Alderks SO. Will Bednar FR, Caleb Zulauf FR, Jake Mills FR.

Preview – The Bulldogs look to be a team that will challenge for a top 10 finish again. There are four runners back from last year’s sixth place team. This group will be young, yet talented. “They did a great job of incorporating the new freshmen into the team, to the point that the first day of practice didn't feel like the first,” said Coach Andrew Wallmer. “The whole group has a strong chemistry. The veteran runners really went out of their way to organize fun events for the team over the summer. Kind of stuff helps all the guys, but even more so the new runners, from burning out.”

It does help that Walmer has two strong runners up front like Augustus Gaudio and Henry McMurry. Both have good junior season as the two finished 25th/26th last November at state. They could be among the top 15 this season. “Gaudio and McMurry basically tied for 25th last year at state,” added Walmer. “The goal is to take that speed they developed this track season, mix it up with some strength this summer and fall, and have a big race at the state meet. As a pair, they're about as great as a coach would ask for--They really understand that they're both better as individual runners when they cooperate in training and racing. Them leading the teams excites me for what could come this fall. Now we just need to stay healthy and have some fun along the way.” The three-five pack should be within 30 seconds of each other led by Tate Bode, Adam Smigielski, and Tay Gergen. A key will be moving that pack with 35 seconds of Gaudio/McMurry.

9 – Vernon Hills

Coach – Steven Szabo

2024 Finish – 11th, 3A Hof Est Sec

Central Suburban League

Runners – Bryant Lester JR, Konstantin Koychev SR, Trevor Todd SR, Will Gagamov JR, Aarav Sheth SR, Jacob Sultan SR, Noah Diaz JR, Ben Slavish SR

Preview - The Cougars could be one of the 2A team surprises this fall after running in Class 3A in 2024 and finishing 11th at the Hoffman Estates Sectional. The top three runners from that team along with five overall are back. “The team committed themselves to a different style of summer training this year and really are focused on making the most out of this upcoming season,” said Coach Steven Szabo. “They have shown a "why not us" mentality and have put lots of work in to make things happen.” Bryant Lester is in position to have a great season in the state series on Class 2A. Lester dropped his personal best in track down to 4:23 in the 1600 and 9:25 in the 3200. Konstantin Koychev and Trevor Todd are the senior runners that will lead the group behind Lester. The development of their top five will be something to watch during September. The top five spread is expected to be 60 seconds to start the season.

10 – Morris

Coach – Joe Blumberg

2024 Finish – 16th, 2A State

Interstate Eight Conference

Runners – Cuyler Swanson JR, Everett Swanson JR, Nikita Hovious SR, Brodie Peterson SR, Jonathan Zarbock SR, Chase McConnell SR, Parker Fleetwood SR, Hunter Russell SR, Trevor Mitoraj FR, Vic Larsen FR, Payton Luberda FR

Preview – A team that I would keep an eye on in 2025. Morris had some ups and downs last fall but still ended up finishing 16th at state. Their top 10 runners are all back along with a good group of freshmen entering the program. “Mentoring, leadership, and going the extra mile, this may be normal at schools with 75, 100, 150 runners, but at a small public school with 22 guys in the program, this was the first year that a typical summer contact day involved,” said Coach Joe Blumberg. “Varsity guys get their workout in at 6 am. They would then pace, lead, and mentor our JV runners at 7 am. Most would then stay to volunteer at our junior high camp. Our varsity guys are safely averaging 8 to 10 miles per day. They are solid runners. They are even better young men.”

Cuyler and Everett Swanson had played basketball for their first two years at Morris. They gave that up this summer and will concentrate on running the final two years. Cuyler will be one of the favorites this fall after finishing fourth. He ran the 3200 on the track last spring his third time was 9:26.06 for fourth in Charleston. This change of focus could mean big things for him. His brother Everett finished 38th last year and could be someone we could see finish in the top 25. The top five spread should be ignored, especially with C Swanson, which is far ahead. Their spread with E Swanson, Nikita Hovious, Brodie Peterson, and Jonathan Zarbock at 94 seconds. That gap should narrow under 60 seconds by the time they get to October. “We've never won a conference, regional, sectional title or state trophy,” added Blumberg. “Might not be the best team in our little 6-team conference (Kaneland?)! Prior to 2023, no Morris team had advanced to state. This group in 2023 made a lofty goal to win a state title in 2025. Bold, daring, but they were willing to put it out there, and we've built it for this fall. Over the past three years we've added First to the Finish, the Eddington Invite, and now the Vicky Piela Invite in Grayslake. Mileage is up. Summer attendance was fantastic. Are we good enough to compete for a trophy in 2A? Not for me to proclaim (and what good does that do?). We will surrender to the results, and we are going to enjoy this final season together, but we will run extremely hard and compete for each other.”

11 – Aurora Marmion Academy

Coach – Andrew Lifka

2024 Finish – 7th, 2A State

Chicago Catholic League

Runners – Michael Whitacre SR, Joseph Dorando SR, Jonah Sartain SR, Samuel Rowe SR, Lucas Galindo SR, Flynn Bennett SO, Brandon Jurado JR, Lochlan Finnegan SR, Guillermo Ponce JR, Grayson Warren FR, Charlie Wegener FR, EJ Acosta FR, Calvin Graves FR.

Preview – The Cadets had a good finish at the end of last season finishing seventh in the 2A State Meet. Marmion returns five from that state team. They do lose their top two runners John Daffenberg and Matthew Sullivan who both graduated. “Our top 5 runners are all returning seniors from last year’s state meet top 7,” said Marmion Coach Andrew Lifka. “They are not only hardworking and talented runners, but they are the most cohesive group of senior leaders the Marmion cross country team in over a decade. These five – Michael Whitacre, Joseph Dorando, Jonah Sartain, Sam Rowe, and Lucas Galindo – are passionate about making this team a group that believes in its mission to "Glorify God by doing the best we can every day to become the best versions of ourselves” and to hammer home the meaning behind this season’s team theme “THIS MATTERS.” They believe in this team. They believe this team will achieve special things this season and improve on our 2023 and 2024 finishes. They believe that this team can and will matter for every guy on our team.”

Whitacre was the team’s third runner finishing 68th. It will not doubt me if he finishes within reach of all-state. The Cadets are projected to start the season with a 50-52 second top five spread. Marmion tends to close the gap starting during the state series. A team that has their sights on finishing in the top 10.

12 – Normal University

Coach – Lester Hampton

2024 Finish – 11th, 2A State

Central State Eight Conference

Runners – Sean Kaeb SR, Andrew Aldeman SO, Jacob Bauchmoyer JR, Aaden Richards JR, Keaton North SO, JW Black SO, Lucas Layman SO, JT Piper SR, Spencer Boesdorfer SR, Nathan Moran JR.

Preview – U-High relies on tight pack running for success in races especially the end of the season. The Pioneers finished 11th last year now with their sights om making it to Detweiller Park in November. Their top five are back led by Sean Kaeb who might be the only senior in the top five. Kaeb finished 54th in last year’s state race. Andrew Adelman was the team’s second runner and is coming off a good track season where he dropped his time down to 4:24 for 1600 meters. JW Black, Keaton North, Jacob Bauchmoyer, and Aaden Richards are some of the runners that we should keep an eye on to make the top five. Their top five spread at state was just 36 seconds. Kaeb moving closer to the front with the pack flowing makes the Pioneers to watch in the top five.

13 – Metamora

Coach – Hunter Roedell

2024 Finish – 15th, 2A State

Mid Illini Conference

Runners – Zach Born JR, Caleb Scheirer JR, Elijah Gerkin JR, Wilbert Eppenger SR, Drew Hodel JR, Tommy Casey SR, Ben Thalen JR, Landon Haun SO, Joshua Fisher JR, Eli Bricker JR.

Preview – The Redbirds could be in the mix for a top 10 finish when we get to November. Metamora has five runners back after finishing 15th in the state race. Zach Born ran great during the state series finishing 10th at state running 14:42. Born could be among the top five finishers when we get back to state. Caleb Scheirer should be the runner to lead the pack. He averaged 70 seconds behind Born during state series races. Elijah Gerkin, Wilbert Eppenger, and Drew Hodel should be running for 30 seconds between each other this fall.

14 – Deerfield

Coach – Scott Friedlander

2024 Finish – 15th, 3A Hof Est Sec

Central Suburban League

Runners – Andrew Calderon JR, Jamie Chandler SR, Scott Harvey SR, Ethan Reich JR, Sam Chaban SR, Hugo Albrecht-Buehler SR, Logan Luo JR, Nolan Tossing SR, Jay Noren SR, Eli Duncan JR, Will Lambert SR.

Preview – Deerfield is used to the scenario of switching back and forth between Class 2A and Class 3A considering their enrollment level is so close to the cutoff. This year, it is Class 2A for the Warriors. They finished 15th at the Hoffman Estates Sectional. It might be a top 15 finish at state for this team. “There's certainly extra excitement in the air because of the opportunities that lie before us,” Coach Scott Friedlander said. “Given the guys we have returning, we figure to have a very strong team this year, which would be exciting on its own. And now that the IHSA placed us in 2A, we have a very realistic opportunity to be on the podium at Detweiller in November again.”

Andrew Calderon and Jamie Chandler appear to be the top runners heading into this fall. Calderon had a breakout season making it to state track. “His (Calderon) summer has gone well too, though for some reason it always seems to take him a few races to get it going even with great off-season training, but the concern never lasts too long,” added Friedlander. “Chandler is had his ups and downs (Chandler did not run in the state series. He is healthy and had a good summer too. I hope the emergence of Andrew as a training and racing partner might help Jamie.” Sam Chaban has come on strong at the end of May and could jump into the top five. Jasper Fine and Scott Harvey are some of the runners you could see among the top five runners.

15 – Highland

Coach – Megan McKee

2024 Finish – 13th, 2A State

Mississippi Valley Conference

Runners – Caleb Knobloch SO, Adin Roach SR, Joshua Knobloch SO, Donnie Miller SR, Walker Nehrt JR, Liam Priest JR, Adam Gillison SR, Zach Smith SR

Preview – Highland again should be looking for another trip to state. The Bulldogs return five from the state team that finished 13th last year. They should have a solid first four runners separated by 25 seconds or better. Christian Knobloch ran 15:37 as a freshman last year and will challenge for the top spot along with Aidan Roach, Joshua Knobloch, and Donnie Miller. There is expected to be a larger spread between fourth and fifth projected to be near 65 seconds. Walker Nehrt, who was the team’s sixth runner at the end of the year, appears to be the runner that we will see in their top five.

16 – Herrin

Coach – James Elliott

2024 Finish – 27th, 2A State

Southern Illinois River-To-River Conference

Runners – Nolen Frost JR, Mason King SR, Braden Davis SR, Maddox Burks SR, Sam Jolliff SR, Miles Ellet SO, Andrew Jolliff SO, Elliott Polley SO.

Preview – Herrin made it to the state meet last season for the first time since 2012 in the Class 1A Meet. The Tigers have the experience that should payoff this fall after placing 27th in the state meet. “The one thing that stood out over the Summer is the commitment of the Varsity and Junior Varsity Boys,” said their coach James Elliott. “There was huge participation in both the morning and afternoon practice sessions. Five runners will be counted on to do the scoring led by last year’s top runner Nolen Frost who finished 71st at state. Mason King and Braden Davis stayed within 25 seconds of Frost and will make their scoring pack even stronger. Other returners Maddox Burks and Sam Joliff are poised to challenge for the top five. Miles Ellet was injured a good part of last fall but has been strong over the summer. “He only ran 3 meets last year due to an early season injury,” added Elliott. “He made 95% of all practices and could very well be in our top 3 of Varsity runners.”

17 – Lombard Montini

Coach – Eric Bechtel

2024 Finish – 7th, 1A State

Chicago Catholic League

Runners – Nino Pesola JR, Adriel Garcia JR, Matthew Ferris FR, Gavin Conway JR, Sean Buckley SR, Graham Reiser JR, Owen Ferris JR, Kevin Barrett SO, Andrew Vreeland JR, Charlie Ahrens SO, Ben Conway FR.

Preview – This will be a young team with 11 of their top 12 projected to be underclassmen. The Broncos ran their best race of season in Peoria finishing seventh in the Class 1A State race. Montini will be in class 2A this season. Montini has never qualified out of the 2A state meet in the program’s history. That could happen in a couple of months. “We have been a much more consistent team this summer,” said their coach, Eric Bechtel. “We had a majority of the team here for all 20 contact days. That has not always been the case.”

Nino Pesola was all-state his sophomore season finishing 10th in the 1A state meet running 15:06. Don’t be surprised if he finishes in the top 15 or better in this class. Adriel Garcia and Gavin Conway ran within 10 seconds of each other last fall and will challenge for the second position. It might be Matthew Ferris that steps into the second spot. The freshman finished 11th in the 1A IESA State Meet and should contribute in their top five immediately. Sean Buckley was the team’s sixth runner last year. “Sean has really come on strong the last year and a half,” said their coach Eric Brechtel. “He is focused on finishing his high school career on a high note.” Montini will be tested early with meets at Fenton and First to the Finish the first two weeks of September.

18 – Belvidere North

Coach – Ken Husser

2024 Finish – 20th, 2A State

Northern Illinois Ten Conference

Runners – Judah Binger SO, Martin Hernandez SO, Zachary Rediger SR, Henrik Piske SO, Lucas Hoemke SR, Brandon Molina SR, Giannie Casis JR, Benjamin Meyers SR, Devin Svarc FR.

Preview – The Blue Thunder most likely will improve on last year’s 20th place finish in the 2A State Meet, Five runners are back from that team. “We had the best summer of training since I started coaching the boys team six years ago and hopefully this will carry over into the competitive season,” said veteran coach Ken Husser. “We have a nice mix of experience and youth that have come together as a team. Over the summer, they were willing to put in the time and dedicate themselves to making the team better.” Judah Binger was the team’s second runner most of last year running 15:26 at state finishing 56th. He should step into the #1 replacing graduated Jesse Kramer. Binger had a big track season dropping his time down to 9:26 for 3200 meters and 4:17 for the mile. Big things could be in store for the sophomore this fall. Alex Hernandez gives the team a solid second runner. Zachary Redinger, Henrik Piske, and Lukas Hoemke staying within 40 seconds could mean big things for this team.

19 – Waterloo

Coach – Larry Huffman

2024 Finish – 17th, ORC Sec

Mississippi Valley Conference

Runners – Luke Smith SO, Tyler DeVilder JR, Liam Gilbert SO, Chase Wagenknecht SR, Jeremy Warden SR, Anthony Tannous JR, Jaxson Carver JR, Rutger Lister JR, Adam Gilbert FR, Cannon Hensiek FR.

Preview – Last year’s team had its ups and downs. It happens especially with a young team. Five runners are back from the team that finished 17th at the Richland County Sectional. Luke Smith came on strong last fall as the freshman made it to finishing 148th. Tyler DeVilder was the team’s top runner at times last fall. The junior should be within 20 seconds of Smith and maybe closer as this season progresses. The gap between DeVilder, Jeremy Warden, Chase Wagenknecht, and Liam Gilbert were within 20 seconds of each other. The sectional race was not the best for DeVilder on that day. Their top five spread is projected to be between 70 to 75 seconds to start the season.

20 – Maple Park Kaneland

Coach – Chad Clarey

2024 Finish – 5th, 2A State

Interstate Eight Conference

Runners – Carson Kaiser SO, Evan Whildin SR, Gavin Smith JR (first year of xc; ran track), Joey Schuch JR, Nathan Kowalczyk JR, Nolan Reutimann JR, Zavier Northnagel JR, Gavin Schnurstein SO, Mason Stalcup SO.

Preview – The Knights were hit with graduation to three runners in their top five last year in finishing fifth the state meet. It could be a rebuilding year for Kaneland. They do have Carson Kaiser who was lights out during cross country and track. “Carson is stepping into the role of leading the team, and is not shy about it,” said his coach Chad Clarey. “He is eager to lead his group to what is next for the program. He put up some of the best freshman times in Illinois last spring (9:16.09 converted 3200, 4:20.48 converted 1600). Carson has the desire to elevate his mileage and his craft. He's a hungry competitor; this bodes well for us.”

Evan Whildin is on the verge of a top 20 finish this fall after placing 36th last year. “Evan has been as reliable as they come. Whildin has run times faster than many All-State efforts in the last decade but has yet to get the medal as 2A continues to improve,” added Clarey. “He ran 15:10 at Finals last fall and is eager to return to Detweiller with his team alongside. We will adjust this fall to his racing and training plan to leave him in a better position to have a crack at the Top 25. He's run like he wants it; all summer long.” Gavin Smith ripped some great times in the 800 running 1:57.38, He is coming out this fall for the first time. He could contribute to making their top five even stronger. Runners such as Joey Schuch and Nathan Kowalczyk might be runners that step in the team’s top five. Keep an eye on their spread from their third to fifth runners is projected to start the year near 2:30. They will get low points from Kaiser and Whildin but the pack from the top two to the pack might be near 70 seconds.

21 – Washington

Coach – Kathryn Petravick

2024 Finish – 12th, 2A state

Mid Illini Conference

Runners – Ben Gorsage JR, Ethan Sakata JR, Seth Larsen SR, Aiden Crull JR, Nolan Sonderman JR, Cade Hahn SR, Alex Linnemann SO, Ethan Adams SO, Owen Spezio SR, Jonah Rose FR, Evan Goettler FR, JB Redlingshafer FR.

Preview – The Panthers finished 12trh in last year’s state meet returning four runners from that squad. Ben Gorsage had a breakout track season finishing third in the 3A 800 last spring running 1:54. Gorsage ran 14:54 for all-state last fall placing 24th. Times of 14:45 or faster are possible for this junior. The pack behind Gorsage, led by Ethan Sakata and Seth Larsen could have a spread of 35 seconds or more. Gorsage being 90 seconds ahead of that group might hurt Washington’s chances of making it back to state. “The boys took a lot of initiative this summer to better themselves as individuals and as a team,: said coach Kathryn Petravick. “They created a regular lifting regime and held team get-togethers to further team comradery. They took it upon themselves to get together a group to run Detweiller at Dark and had a blast. All of those are essential to create a collective team mindset.”

22 – Taylorville

Coach – Steve Walters

2024 Finish – 8th, 2A ORC Sec

Apollo Conference

Runners – Liam Bettis JR, Tyler Corpin SR, Alexander Davis SR, Colt Perkins SO, Ross Brown SR, Logan Halligan JR, David Schafer SR,

Preview – Taylorville missed qualifying for the state meet by two points placing eighth at the Richland County Sectional. Will the Tornadoes make it to state this fall? They made it for their only time in 2023. Liam Bettis again should be the team’s top runner after finishing 58th last season. He finished 44th as a freshman. Bettis did run 9:14.98 for 3200 meters last spring which could push him to bigger things this fall. Six of their top seven are back from that sectional team. The pack led by Tyler Corpin and Alexander Davis will be over a minute behind Bettis. Their projected top five spread is anticipated to be two minutes. A team that will be ready to go by state series time.

23 – Woodstock

Coach – Jay Fuller

2024 Finish – 21st, 2A State

Kishwaukee River Conference

Runners – Ellery Shutt SR, Jason Trojan SR, Elijah Hedges JR, Josh Roth JR, Adam Bailey JR, Will Kashmier SR, Landon Beltran SO, Dexter Parisi SO, Mason Weger SO, Bresean Shutt FR.

Preview – The Silver Streaks could get into the top 20 this November after finishing 21st. Six runners of the state team top seven. Ellery Shutt is back as the team’s top runner. He had a great junior season running 14:42 to finish ninth. Shutt should be among the top 2A runners in the state this fall. “The boys are running for each other and willing to put in the time and effort to have a good season,” said Coach Jay Fuller. “The captains Jason (Trojan) and Will (Kashmier) have been good senior leaders for us this summer. Their top five spread could be troublesome with a projected spread of nearly three minutes. It could get lower by November.

24 – Dunlap

Coach – Chris Friedman

2024 Finish – 9th, 2A Metamora Sec

Mid Illini Conference

Runners – Tyson Horn SO, Jack Nester SR, Max Draksler JR, Ben Bobchik SO, Tyler Owen SO, Evan Huntington JR, Ben McClelland JR, Darius Citea SO.

Preview – Dunlap made it oh so close to making it to the state meet after finishing ninth at the Metamora Sectional. Five runners are back for the Eagles. Tyson Horn and Jack Hester gained some state meet experience with Horn finishing with a 15:50 time. Hester finished five seconds back. “What has stood out the most this summer is the chemistry being built amongst this group,” said their coach Chris Friedman. “They genuinely enjoy running and being together. I'm so excited about this season.” Max Draksler, Ben Bobchik, and Ben McClelland give Dunlap a good top five. The three runners were separated by 15 seconds in the sectional race. The pack is within 35 seconds of Horn/Nester. “Our depth on the boys side is one of our strengths,” added Friedman. “While we are in a tough area, I whole-heartedly believe this team is a state qualifying team and might even surprise some at the end of the season.”

25 – Cary-Grove

Coach – Mark Anderson

2024 Finish – 8th, 3A Warren Reg

Fox Valley Conference

Runners – Jameson Tenopir SR, Nate Kephart JR, Lucas Kephart JR, Aaron Milewski SO, Bradley Kyle SO, Braden Bogda SR, Mikey Starr FR, Parker Post FR, Teddy Wagner FR, Ben Garrad

Preview – Cary-Grove makes the move down to Class 2A after failing to make it out of the 3A Warren Regional when they finished eighth. “There is a lot of excitement on our team about our move down to 2A,” said Coach Mark Anderson. “It is one of the reasons why we have so many new runners this season. Our summer was very productive. There has been a lot of "buy in" among the team as we work to establish a championship culture in our program again.” The move down to Class 2A will benefit Jameson Tenopir who just missed all-state last year finishing 28th but still running 14:39. After a strong track season where he was all-state in the 3A 1600 Meter Run where he finished fourth. Tenopir’s spring improvement could mean we see him among the top runners in Class 2A. The key is building a pack behind Tenopir. Nate and Lucas Kephart ran within five seconds in their regional race but was over two minutes behind Tenopir. They will have 16 freshmen on their roster almost half of their total group. We could see freshmen like Mikey Starr and Parker Post challenging a spot in the top five.

26 – Marion

Coach – Scott Gill

2024 Finish – 14th, 2A State

South Seven Conference

Runners – Raphael Greer JR, Gabriel Greer JR, Wyatt Kremer SO, Joseph Mings SR, Seve Bruce FR, Jonathan Parks SO, Tai Doan SR

Preview – Marion returns six runners back from their state team that finished 14th at state. Raphael and Gabriel Greer finished 16th and 17th last year in Peoria. They are a good bet to finish among the top 10 runners this fall in this classification. “Raphael and Gabriel have matured and are ready to have some fun this fall,” said Coach Scott Gill. “Dylon Nalley set the bar high, and they are ready to run at that level. One pleasant surprise this summer has been Joseph Mings. He has been consistent and steadily improving.” Mings will be among the top five runners. Fellow top five runners Wyatt Kremer and freshman Seve Bruce have experienced some minor injuries this summer according to Gill who expects them to be ready to go by the beginning of October. Both runners are expected to finish among the top five.

27 – Glen Ellyn Glenbard South

Coach – Doug Gorski

2024 Finish – 8th, 2A Hins South Sec

Upstate Eight Conference

Runners – Thomas Jochum JR, Giancarlo Pietrasanta SO, Evan Rubinas SO, Kajus Eidukevicius FR, Gus Kling SR, Andrew Walter SO, Leo O’Brill JR, Austin Frederick JR.

Preview – The Raiders missed a chance to run in the state meet last year finishing eighth at the Hinsdale South Sectional. Things look promising for Glenbard South as five runners return from that sectional thing. The big thing is that their top runners are healthy and ready to go. “We had a robust turnout at our summer running camp, with strong participation from our top runners,” said Coach Doug Gorski. “All have been putting in significant mileage and improving their times compared to last year. This young group has gained valuable Varsity race experience in both cross country and track last seasons.” Thomas Jochum is the top returning runner in Class 2A after finishing second in last year’s state race. Jochum ran some fast times indoor with a 9:19 3200. He missed the outdoor season due to a stress fracture by his toes. He raced sparingly outdoors. “He has fully recovered from his stress fracture and is showing impressive progress, with workout times faster than last summer,” added Gorski. “He trains with his older brother Tim, who runs for Valparaiso, and Tom has set ambitious goals for the season.” Giancarlo Pietrasanta and Evan Rubinas put good summers of training and will form a solid pack behind Jochum, “Developing a strong 2-7 pack will be crucial for us as we aim to advance through the Regional and Sectional meets and get back down to Detweiler as a team once again,” added Gorski.

28 – Olney Richland County

Coach – Amy Julian

2024 Finish – 12th, 2A ORC Sec

Little Illini Conference

Runners – Quaid Berger SO, Judah Docks SO, Tristin Butler SO, Kaeden Davis JR, Landon Livingston SO, Austin Kuenstler SO, Oliver Fehrenbacher SO.

Preview – It was no surprise that Richland County finished 12th in their own sectional with four of their top five runners last year all freshmen. This team will improve this fall with possibilities of finishing into the top seven in the sectional and making it to state. Quaid Berger made it to state as an individual finishing 35th. Their spread after Berger, led by Judah Dicks and Tristin Butler from second to fifth runners was close to two minutes. Last year’s race experiences will get that spread near 60 seconds.

29 – Crystal Lake Central

Coach – Judd Shutt

2024 Finish – 10th, 2A State

Fox Valley Conference

Runners – Amana Omale SR, Reed Mihelich SR, Oliver Lavaty JR, Brennan Reinhard JR, Chase Teresi JR, Ethan McMahon JR, Ethan Schultz SR, Will Komanicki FR, Daniel Polston FR, Santiago Ovalle FR

Preview – Judd Shutt moves from Prairie Ridge as he takes over the Crystal Lake Central program. The Tigers finished tenth at state last year and return three runners from that team. A fourth runner, Keshav Parekh, transferred to IMSA. “I am replacing a legendary coach in Bill Eschman,” said Shutt. “Although some routines have changed, the boys have bought in and consistently did what was asked of them all summer.” Arana Omale was the team’s third runner and will challenge Reed Mihelich for the top spot. The senior ran 4:24 last spring for 1600 and will be ready to take the next step up. The top five spread is projected to be near 90 seconds to start the year. Building a top seven will be something to watch especially during September. “A new coaching routine and numerous new varsity faces will make this Crystal Lake Central season very intriguing,” added Shutt.

30 – Springfield

Coach – Trae Cotner

2024 Finish – 15th, 3A Norm Sec

Central State Eight Conference

Runners – Kishan Ugrappa JR, Alexander Ratz SR, Collin Nolte JR, Sam Batterman JR, David Peeler JR, Benjamin Walden SR, Clayton Borah SR, Blake Schmidt SO, Jordan Green SO, Gavin Rachford FR

Preview – A big boost for the Senators is their move from one of the smallest Class 3A teams to one of the largest in Class 2A. Good things appear to be in store for Springfield after finishing 15th in the Class 3A Normal Sectional. Their entire top seven from that team are back. “The buy in and attendance at summer workouts was spectacular,” said Springfield Coach, Trae Cotner. “We have one of the strongest groups we have had in a long time, and they all know how hard it is going to be to make our top 7.” Like Cotner stated, this team is deep. Alexander Ratz and Jordan Green had great training summers and will be among the front runners on this squad. Green had a fantastic freshman season running 4:42 and 10:09. He could be the surprise on this team. Kishan Ugrappa was among the top five last season and again should be in their front pack. The Senators are projected to have a 35 to 40 second spread on their top five to start the year. “We are ready to compete for a top 10 finish in 2A,” added Cotner “The boys are excited to compete against their conference rivals in Glenwood and U-High. Going to be a great fall in the Capitol City.”

Other Class 2A Schools to watch this fall; schools listed in Alphabetical order

Carterville

Coach – Nancy Adams

2024 Finish – 14th, 2A ORC Sec

Southern Illinois River-To River Conference

Runners – August Anderson SR Reece Scott JR, James Samples SR, Mason Webb JR, Roman Beyke JR, Nick Wilhelm SO, Jack Robertson SO, Vincent Lin JR.

Preview – The Lions finished just 14th last year at the Richland County Sectional. The good thing is they will reload from there with their top six runners all coming back. Good and having a tight pack a team that could be in contention for one of the seven state qualifying spots. August Anderson, Reece Scott, and James Samples were close to each other in races giving this team power in the front. Roman Beyke and Nick Wilhelm were fourth and fifth runners at the sectional and within 40 seconds of that front trio. Anderson ran 15:54 at Peoria at the beginning of last October. Getting that pack closer to that pace make this team a state meet threat.

Chatham-Glenwood

Coach – Mike Garber

2024 Finish – 24th, 2A State

Central State Eight Conference

Runners – Van Schneider SR, Brady Moser SR, Adam Galvan SO, Hudson Schneider SO, Ari Anderson SO, Sam Snider JR, Yehun Suh JR, Jax Barton FR.

Preview – The Titans may have some bumps in the road especially to the start the year after losing five of their top seven to graduation after finishing 24th at the state meet. There is talent that was waiting for their chance to run in the top seven last year. Now they could do it. “We had boys put in work, but in smart ways,” said coach Mike Garber. “We didn't over run mileage like we have in previous years. We focused more on health and being more physical which should pay dividends when it counts.” Van Schneider finished 53rd last year and is fully healthy for the start of this fall. Brady Moser had a good track season until back issues slowed him down. It could take him a little time to get back to full strength Adama Galvan and freshman Jax Brunson had good summers of training and should step up into the top five. “I'm excited for this group,” stated Garber.” We graduated a good number of seniors last year, but this crew is ready to step up. I look forward to them building as the season progresses.”

Chicago Latin

Coach – Dan Daly

2024 Finish – 3rd, 2A State

Independent School League

Runners – Micah Weiss SO, Nicholas Rastatter SO, Gavin Moffett FR, Ojas Gupta FR, Jack Ramsey SR, Eli Goodman SO, Sebastian Lee-Yee SR, William Wener SO, David Patterson SO.

Preview – It will be a rebuilding year for the Romans after finishing third in the Class 2A State Meet. Five of their top seven runners have graduated. Micah Weiss ran 15:03 to finish 30th last year and will be the team’s top runner. Nicholas Rastatter finished 13 seconds behind Weiss giving Latin a strong top two. “Both Micah and Nico are coming off phenomenal freshman seasons,” said their Coach Dan Daly. “They have continued to smartly to build their base over the summer and will now be the leaders of the Roman Legion.” The Romans have a good group of freshmen led by Gavin Moffett and Ojas Guputa who should contribute to the team's top five immediately. We will have a good idea of what this team looks like by the beginning of October. …………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Chillicothe Illinois Valley Central

Coach – Dennis Fraikes

2024 Finish – 10th, 2A Metamora Sec

Illini Prairie Conference

Runners – Aiden Duhs JR, Cullen Fahrenkrug JR, Alex Crull SO. Colter Hedden SO, Adam Murnan JR, Reece Fraikes SR, Noah Smith SO, Jaedin Williams SR, Brody Miller FR, Henry Skalet FR.

Preview – The Grey Ghosts appear to be on the verge to make it to the state meet. They will look to make it back to the state meet for the first time since 2016 (when they were in 1A) after finishing 10th last year at the Metamora Sectional. Missing qualifying by 12 points. Their top 12 runners are back along with a few good freshmen that could contribute immediately. Aiden Duhs took a big step-up last spring running 1:56 at all-state in the 800. Cullen Fahrenkrug qualified for state last fall along with Duhs giving IVC great leadership in the front. “Our team worked very hard this summer running together and building a better mileage base than last summer,” added their coach, Dennis Fraikes. The one thing that should be concentrated on is their top five spread from their sectional race which was 91 seconds. Their top four spread in that race was 51 seconds. The addition of freshman Brody Miller, an IESA All-State runner from last year, will give this top five a big boost.

Crystal Lake Prairie Ridge

Coach – Ethan Baker

2024 Finish – 10th, 2A Kaneland Sec

Fox Valley Conference

Runners – Thomas Henry JR, Steven Randles JR, Kieran Gilleland SR, JB Torgerson SR, Kye Gunter SO, Troy Laukert JR, Trevor Dam SR. Bodhi Lee SR, Max Firak SO.

Preview – Ethan Baker steps in as the new coach replacing long time coach JD Shutt who moved over to crosstown Crystal Lake Central. Baker inherits six of the seven runners that finished 10th at the Kaneland Sectional. It is tough to be in one of the seven qualifying spots to make it to state. The Wolves will be in that discussion. Thomas Henry is a solid top runner for his team. Steven Randles and Kieran Gilleland form a solid 2/3 that stayed within 20 seconds of Henry. This team is projected to have a spread of 50 seconds. Moving the pack closer to the front gets this team to Peoria.

Geneseo

Coach – Todd Ehlert

2024 Finish – 26th, 2A State

Western Big Sis Conference

Runners – Jaxson Sottros SR, Henley Bourne SO, Graysen Carlson SR, Aidan Bries SR, Kaden Elmer SR, Greyson Claerhout SO, Kael McCord SO, Fritz Bolme SO, Willi Davis FR

Preview – The Maple Leafs finished 26th at last year’s state meet. Four of the five runners are seniors and have state meet experience. “We have a strong senior group this year along with some good juniors,” said their Coach Todd Ehlert. “It will be exciting to see if the seniors can lead this team to another state appearance.” Jaxson Sottos should step into the team’s top spot replacing graduated all-state Dylan Gehl. Sottos finished 91st last year. Henry Bourne is the lone sophomore projected to be in the top five. Bourne was 31 seconds back of Sottos at state. Keeping their spread under 50 seconds from their second to fifth runners will be something to watch for. Sottos is the lone runner back under 16-minutes. The improvement they had this summer indicates they could make it to state.

Lemont

Coach – John Kennedy Jr.

2024 Finish – 8th, 2A Metamora Sec

South Suburban Blue Conference

Runners – Gavin Abad JR, Jacob Czerwiec JR, Sam Scoville SR, Scott Biedess JR, Matthew Breszach SR, Matthew Breszach SR, Ahmed Suleiman SO, Michael Tilly SR

Preview – Lemont came oh so close to making it to the Class 2A state meet finishing eighth in the Metamora Sectional missing by one point. This fall should be promising with their top four runners back. Gavin Abad, Jacob Czerwiec, and Scott Biedess give Lemont a strong front three separated by 20 seconds. Scott Scoville is another 20 seconds back making this top four tough. Finding a fifth runner will be the thing to watch. What make the team click was that their five-runner spread at the end of the year was 38 seconds. Heading into this season, their top five spread is projected to be close to two minutes. If they fix that spot Lemont could make it to the state meet.

Mascoutah

Coach – Darren Latham

2024 Finish – 9th, 2A ORC Sec

Mississippi Valley Conference

Runners – Lucas Jansen SR, Kaine Climaco SR, Henry Koehler SR, Chris White SO, Trevor Zimmerman JR, Logan Zurbrugg SR, Cole Perryman SR, Jackson Schubert SO, Gavin Kimmle JR.

Preview – There is depth for the Indians even though they returned four runners from the sectional team that finished ninth. Lucas Jansen did qualify individually for the state meet 15:49 to finish 103rd. Chris White will lead the pack behind Jansen though he ran one minute behind him in the sectional race. Henry Koehler and Kaine Climaco have big experiences. You should see them step onto the top five. Logan Zurbrugg and Cole Perryman should be within 15 seconds and will be among the top five. The pack needs to move up. During the season to get in state qualifying position by state series time.

Normal Community West

Coach – Greg Rogers

2024 Finish – 16th, 3A Norm Sec

Big 12 Conference

Runners – Joshua Bierbaum JR, Aiden Starkey SR, Beckett Kreinbhil SO, Jaxon Tomera SR, Allan Watkins JR, Donovan Wright JR, Rami Wazeer SO, Garrison Kaufmann SO, Maddox Schweizer JR.

Preview – This will be a rebuild year for the Wildcats. They return three runners from the team that finished 16th in the Class 3A Normal Sectional. The move from Class 3A to Class 2A will soften the rebuild where they could finish in the top 10 in their sectional perhaps the top seven. All three runners back ran in the team’s top five at the end of last year. Joshia Bierbaum should be a solid top runner. Beckett Kreinbhil and Aiden Starkey were the other two runners back. Both are 25 to 40 seconds behind the front. What looks good is that their top five split is projected to be between 50 to 55 seconds, which will work well for whomever steps into the top five. The key will be getting their pack starting in races between 15:30 to 15:45.

Sycamore

Coach – Jordan Wilkerson

2024 Finish – 25th, 2A State

Interstate Eight Conference

Runners - Logan James SR, Lucas Miller JR, Liam Berry SR, Nate Burgess SR, Noah Murcia JR, Jared Lanting JR, Logan Bolda SO, Jose Ponce SR, Caleb Fruit JR

Preview – Sycamore finished 25th in last year’s Class 2A State Meet but return only three runners from their last year’s top seven. It could be a rebuilding season for the Spartans. Logan James and Lucas Miller were within two seconds of each other at state and should give the team a solid top two. Josh Miller was the team’s sixth runner at state, which was more than 30 seconds behind James and Miller. Nate Burgess and Liam Berry should fill in the rest of the top five. It helps that three of their projected top five will be seniors. Their top five is projected to start at 70 seconds.

West Chicago Wheaton Academy

Coach – Chris Felinski

2024 Finish 10th, 2A Hins South Sec

Chicagoland Christian Conference

Runners – Miguel Boney JR, Luke Osterholm SR, Jacob Erickson JR, Andrew Nyquist SO, Alex Bounds SR, Ezra Southard JR, Andrew Sims FR,

Preview – Four runners are back from the team that finished tenth at the Hinsdale South Sectional. Miguel Boney had a solid sophomore season making it to state running 15:32 to place 69th. “We were focusing on consistency this summer,” said Chris Felinski. “We used all our contact days, and on any given day, 15 of our 22 athletes were at camp.”  There will be some spots to fill in their top seven. Toby Morden, who was projected to be the team’s second runner according to Felinski, did not come out for the team. Luke Linstra, who was projected #4 decided to play Golf this fall. Andrew Sims, a freshman should step into the top five. “Andrew has the ability to just keep running and his biggest thing is learning how to run strategically for 3 miles,” said Felinski. He is a math minded person, loves studying splits and running techniques, and is very coachable.”
